NaPoWriMo: Day 2

The goal of  NaPoWriMo is to write 30 poems in 30 days (the month of April). I will attempt to either write a poem or share a favorite of mine several days a week, not everyday. I really love good poetry, and I don’t invest nearly enough time into it. NaPoWriMo will provide me a nice kick start to diving back in.

Here is one of my favorites by Edgar Allen Poe called A Dream Within A Dream. I recited this poem as part of a presentation during my freshman year when researching Sigmund Freud’s theory on the meaning of dreams. For me, some lines are so heartbreakingly beautiful in this poem, it makes me want to give up on life. Somehow, I mean this in a good way though. Enjoy:

Portrait of Edgar Allen Poe (Maryland attorney...

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

Poe is my one true Hero.

I recently did an article on him on my blog about how he has influenced my writing and my life. I think you will enjoy it if you are a fan of Poe!

Great post! I Wish more people would get inspired by Poe and compose more posts and material on him.

    • My assumption is if you aren’t moved by Poe, you are probably dead inside. 🙂
I will definitely check out your post!
